Traditional Foods
Many traditional dishes
employ simple, contrasting
flavors, such as the traditional
dish of hearty meatballs and
gravy with tart, pungent
lingonberry jam.
Although many traditional
dishes are simple, the cuisine
is in large parts similar to
many other European cuisines.
Another Swedish favorite
cuisine is the traditional
Pickled herring, sour cream
and chopped chives, potatoes
and an egg half.
Here is the Potato casserole - called
Janssons Frestelse.
We usually see this dish on our
Christmas Smorgasbord, but is equally
enjoyed at Easter with Eggs and the
crisp Vasa Bread.
Potatoes are eaten all year-round in
Sweden.
New potatoes at Midsommar is served
together with pickled herring, chives,
sour cream and the first strawberries of
the year are traditionally served as
desert.
A Southern Sweden specialty is crayfish. It is a
small lobster like shellfish. It is a big hit in the fall.
A young Swede enjoys California crayfish
in August celebrated with Swedish
Immigrants and US ancestors.
